Abstract

Brachypodium retusum (Pers.) Beauv. (Poaceae) is a Mediterranean native grass. It dominates on the most degraded stage of Mediterranean vegetation. Because of its biological and ecological traits, B. retusum seems appropriate for Mediterranean landss restoration. The aim of this work is to know about germination and development of this grass, through the firsts development stages. By means of green house conditions, it have been experiment with germination faculty, growth and development of plants, under three substrate types, two fertilization and irrigation types. A periodic control has been carried out for different variables (number of shoots, green leafs and dried leafs). Also, for these ones, aboveground and belowground dried phitomass and vegetal cover was weighed and measured for two stage (72 days and 130 days since sowing). Its concluded that germination can be affected by superficial crusted processes. Moreover, this plant showed resistance in the presence of water stress and high temperatures. So, in the future, this grass would ought to be studied more, because its very interesting potential in interventions of land restauration.
