Estat actual del procés de registre de biopesticides a la UE Authors Carolina Fernández José Manuel Lara Abstract The European Directives 91/414/CEE and 2001/36/EC demand to the companies interested on registering in the UE a biopesticide based on a Biological Control Agent (BCA) to submit a Dossier constituted by information and studies related about the MPCA (Microbial Pest Control Agent) as much as studies performed with the MPCP (Microbial Pest Control Product). The evaluation process in Europe is longer, more complex and expensive than in the United States. As a result of it, whereas in the United States exists 59 registered ACB to date (206 biopesticides), in Europe there are only registered 5 microorganisms (5 biopesticides). The low number of BCA products in the EU alarmed the European Commission and a call was published in the Six Framework Programme for the formation of a network action targeting BCAs (Action REBECA) in which participate experts coming from manufacturing companies of biopesticides, scientifics, technical advisors and regulating authorities. Their main purpose is to accelerate the registration process of BCAs and to reduce costs by developing different proposals about the regulating process, and at the same time, maintain the level of safety towards producers, users and the environment.
