Abstract

The optimal moment of cutting trees has always been a controversial point of discussion among the sciences concerned with forests. This article reviews the decision making rules normally used to determine the optimal moment of felling. It will be demonstrated that strictly forestry criteha may lead to wrong decisions. The introduction of economic aspects, and the inclusion of the idea that forestry plantations are not delimited to an unique cycle is necessary.
Different characteristics related to the economy, the forestry Works and the natural conditions are also considered when men the optimal moment of felling is sought. The relationship established between trees and wood or stumpage prices, production costs, interests rates, forestry Works and the risk of fire is taken into account.
