Abstract

After 1983, several Airborne Pollen Stations (APS) for the estimation of crop productions work in Catalunya. Now, a series of 11 year pollen data is available at the APS of Vilallonga del Camp (Baix Camp), to forecast hazelnut crops in the Camp de Tarragona. At the APS of la Granadella (les Garrigues), 9 year pollen data have been obtained to estimate olive crops in the les Garrigues DO.
These data allow us to evaluate the reliability of the airborne pollen method of crop estimation applied to hazelnut and olive cultures. The correlation indexes between Pollen Concentration and Crop Production, as well as, the deviation between Crop Estimation and Production are R 2 = 0,959 i ± 3,15 %, respectively, for the hazelnut culture (Vilallonga del Camp) and R 2 = 0,95 i ± 8,22 % for the olive culture (la Granadella).
These results prove the high accuracy of this estimation system. Nevertheless, higher deviation in the olive estimation than in the hazelnut one, may be imputed to the agroclimatic features of les Garrigues area, where the incidence of summer water shortage is more important. It must be also considered that the irrigated surface is more extensive in the Camp de Tarragona than in les Garrigues.
For the olive culture, the definition of agrometeorological models is essential, in order to revise progressively initial estimations based on airborne pollen method.
