Rural tourism, new challenges. The Rural Tourism Observatory Authors Enric López Observatori del Turisme Rural del CETT-UB Keywords: tourism, rural, observatory, challenges Abstract The Rural Tourism Observatory (OTR) is a research project developed by Escapadarural.com (a digital platform specialized in rural tourism), the Barcelona School of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy (CETT-UB), and Netquest (a company providing data for market research). The project’s primary goal is to generate expert knowledge on rural tourism in Spain, especially with respect to tourists and owners in this field. By means of an online questionnaire addressed to each of these two groups, we obtained a sample of over 16,000 responses from rural tourists, and over 2,500 responses from rural owners, allowing us to make a careful in-depth analysis of all these data. This expert knowledge is transferred to the academic and professional sector through conferences, congresses, seminars, articles, interviews, etc. In this respect, one of the most important challenges identified in the 2021 edition of the annual OTR Report is how to maintain and consolidate the tourist trend which made these rural getaways the leading summer holiday format in 2021.
