Abstract In this paper, we will be discussing the reason for the cult of trees, the interest shown in them by writers and other creators, the role that trees play in dehesas (grazed woodlands), and the customs relating to them. Other aspects are also considered, including: 1) the large amount of information provided by the proper name of a meaningful tree; 2) the discovery of a series of other heritage elements when tracking down remarkable trees; 3) the important contributions of local experts on the territory when seeking information on trees; 4) the importance of taking great care in the signposting of paths and routes; and 5) the need for the conscientious preservation of the vocabulary that allows the accurate description of plants.
