Strategic importance of irrigation in Catalonia. Innovation and success stories Authors Maite Sisquella Generalitat de Catalunya Francesc Reguant Col·legi d’Economistes de Catalunya Keywords: modernization of irrigation, precision agriculture, rural development, food self-sufficiency, sustainability, climate change. Abstract Irrigation has always been an essential tool for agriculture in the Mediterranean countries, due to their irregular and/or scarce rain. The 21st century, however, offers new technological tools that are enabling a major transformation in irrigation technologies. Moreover, irrigation has ceased to be a question of water alone, forming a key element in a comprehensive system for sustainable crop cultivation. This paper sets out arguments in defence of irrigation’s capital importance and discusses the need for its modernization and the adoption of new technologies, giving some examples of the transformation of irrigation in the 21st century.KEYWORDS: modernization of irrigation, precision agriculture, rural development, food self-sufficiency, sustainability, climate change.
