Abstract Montserrat Soliva i Torrentó passed away on September 15, 2019 after a long struggle with cancer. She was born in Torres de Segre (Lleida Prov.) on January 1, 1943 and attended secondary school in Girona. She obtained her BSc in Sciences (Chemical section) at the University of Barcelona (UB) in 1964. For six years she was the director of the chemical laboratory at the SAFA company in Blanes and in 1976 she obtained her PhD in Sciences (Chemical section) at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). Dr Soliva joined ESAB on January 1, 1976 and in 1989 she was appointed full professor of Chemical Analysis. In August 2006 she voluntarily decided to terminate her professional activity and went into retirement after more than thirty years of dedication to her agricultural engineering students. Her activity in R&D&I was always focused on composting and the valorization of organic residues, areas in which she is considered a first-rate authority. Dr Soliva combined education and research by mentoring the dissertation projects of her students, many of whom are today key agents in the waste management field. She was an active member of ICEA: founder, member of the Board of Directors, member of the editorial board of quaderns agrarrarraris, and author of valuable publications. In response to her merits, the Government of Catalonia awarded Dr Soliva the 2012 Environment Award. Her colleagues, friends and family will never forget her. Many thanks, dear Montserrat, for all that you did and for your legacy. Keywords: Montserrat Soliva i Torrentó, composting, compost, Government of Catalonia Environment Awards, organic waste, waste valorization.
