Abstract

Thrips (Insecta: Thysanoptera) are important arthropod pests on stone fruit orchards and especially nectarines, both in Catalonia and worldwide. In this respect, Frankliniella occcidentalis is the foremost species. It is a polyphagous insect that is also found on dicotyledonous plants forming the ground cover. It is controlled almost exclusively by using chemical means, although natural enemies, whose importance is still to be determined, are found in both trees and the ground cover. The economic losses caused by F. occidentalis are mostly due to aesthetic injury and are responsible for a great number of insecticide applications, even near harvest time. Aesthetic injury does not affect nectarine internal quality. Thus, by acquiescing to a certain amount of very small white dots on nectarine skin, consumers have the opportunity to obtain a great increase in total fruit quality in all aspects of the production process.
