Agronomy and magic in ferrer saiol’s translation of palladius’s opus agriculturae Authors Raimon Sebastian-Torres Universitat de Barcelona Keywords: Roman agronomy, Roman magic, Opus agriculturae, Palladius, Ferrer Saiol. Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze magic in agronomy through the medieval Catalan translation by Ferrer Saiol of Palladius’s Opus agriculturae. First we make a review of magic in Roman agriculture, and then we present the medieval translation from the 14th century by Ferrer Saiol, protonotary of Queen Eleanor of Sicily. We study the copy of the Catalan translation – written around 1385 – which has been preserved (Valencia, Serrano Morales Municipal Library, ms. 6437). Lastly, we review a selection of passages illustrating the various magical practices developed by Palladius and how these practices are transferred to the medieval version by Saiol, specifically, those on how to combat and predict the weather, how to protect domestic animals and crops; and how to deal with pests. Taking this approach, we look into the Latin agronomic magical knowledge and how it was disseminated in the Catalan language at the end of the 14th century in the Crown of Aragon. Keywords: Roman agronomy, Roman magic, Opus agriculturae, Palladius, Ferrer Saiol.
