Abstract

This paper presents a study of the dynamics of industrial employment in the Catalan rural territories since the beginning of the economic depression of 2008, seeking to determine which elements explain the greater or lesser resilience of different rural regions to the crisis. Two different methods were used: a shift-share analysis for all the Catalan regions and a qualitative analysis using focus groups carried out on a selection of three rural regions. The results reveal some significant elements for understanding the different behaviour of employment in the rural areas and they allow us to formulate some general lines of intervention aiming at favouring a greater resilience in these areas.
