Abstract

Growth pattern and the production of fruits in puncturevine plants (Tribulus terrestris L.) were studied in a population located at Torre Marimon. The species had not been observed at this site before the spring of 1998. Pucturevine is a member of the Zygophyllaceae family, and is an annual and prostrate plant with spiny burrs. A life cycle of the plant is described form seedling. Paramenters as mean length of the four main stems (LR), absolute growth rate (TCA), and number of fruits (standing, dropped, aborted, consumed) were evaluated. Values of LR = 2,94 cm and TCA = 0,035 cm/day estimated by means of linear regression would be expected in a plant carrying one fruit, which indicate a high precocity. A provisional estimation of net reproductive rate of the population would suggest that the species is in an incresing demographic phase.
