Los Manuales escolares españoles de Historia Authors Rafael Valls Abstract Spanish History Handbooks for Schools There has never been a rigorous, systematic study of these school manuals. The author establishes four main historical eras in the fields of Spanish history manuals for schools which apply both to secondary and primary education. 1.- The creation of the disciplinary code (1836-1890). 2.- The positive Europeanistic reform of the disciplinary code (1880-1939). 3.- The regression to catholic-patriotic formulas of the disciplinary code (1939-1970). 4.- The search for a new disciplinary, code and the incompatabilities in its creation (1975-1990). In each of these phases the author comments on a series of aspects which help to define the era, for example: types of influences and ideological trends; educational models, didactical focus, educational aims, critical rigour, documentary sources, quantity and quality of conceptual content, degree of interdisciplinarity of the material; intervention of the State, study plans; technology of printing, illustrations and graphics, authors and editorials.
