The educational ideals of schoolteachers from a historical perspective and the challenges of neoliberalism Authors Eugenio Otero Urtaza Universidad de Santiago de Compostela DOI: 10.2436/20.3009.01.323 Keywords: history of education, educational systems, neoliberalism, capitalism and education, moral education Abstract In this article, a study is made of the educational ideals that teachers and their trainers have developed in Spain, using a «long view» methodology. A journey is established from the beginning of the 19th century to the present. The purpose pursued is to highlight the temporal depth of the disagreements that currently exist about the educational system. The confirmation of the permanence of these disagreements over time reveals great ideological contradictions that manifest themselves in the way in which neoliberalism inserts itself into the cracks it finds in public education with a privatizing will, destroying the culture of equal opportunities that it proposed classical liberalism.
