Abstract The innovative teachers from before the Republic worked to dignify the public school and the work of teachers. And they did so based on a new conception of children and schools, with the application of active methodologies and also by instilling certain values. For these teachers schools were supposed to be a forge of citizens to build a modern, just, democratic country.
