Monograph Title: The Professional Selection Courses (1931–1936): A Comparative Historiographical Review of Teacher Training and Selection during the Second Spanish Republic. Coordinator: Meritxell Simon-Martin (University of Lleida) Presentation:Public, free, co-educational, and active education was one of the main priorities of the Second Spanish Republic, seen as a key driver of social change. Consequently, the Provisional Government of the Republic promoted a thorough restructuring of primary public education and teacher training. New primary schools were established and built, the teaching workforce was expanded, teachers' salaries were increased, and the system for the training, selection, and professional development of teachers was reformed. These reforms included modifications to the teacher training curriculum and the replacement of traditional competitive examinations for teaching posts with a new training and selection procedure. The challenges in implementing this five-year plan, beyond budgetary constraints, included the need to swiftly and efficiently select a new cohort of teachers. The last competitive examinations for teaching posts, launched in 1928, remained unresolved due to administrative and legal issues, and organizing a new competitive examination would have required considerable time and resources. As a practical and urgent solution that would also align new teachers with the Republic’s educational ideals, the government introduced the Professional Selection Courses, which took place between 1931 and 1936. This monograph aims to offer a brief comparative historiographical review illustrating the development of the Professional Selection Courses across different provinces. We seek previously unpublished contributions that address topics such as existing publications on the Courses, available primary sources, and potential thematic and methodological approaches for their study. Through this monograph, we hope to foster further research into an underexplored aspect of teacher training and selection during the Second Spanish Republic. Deadline for submission of manuscripts: 1 September 2025.
