Abstract

In this article we compare three versions of the translation of Macbeth by Josep M. Sagarra: the manuscript version (1942), the edition by Edicions Calíope (1946?) and the edition published by Editorial Alpha (1959). Apart from the normative changes introduced, the comparison enables us to focus on a number of interesting aspects of the work: 1) the options considered by Sagarra in the manuscript, but which he finally discarded: 2)or fragments about which Sagarra had most doubts. All these questions contribute to understanding Sagarra's way of translating Shakespeare. Moreover, we also devote a section of the paper to providing the dates of Sagarra's other twenty-eight translations of Shakespeare because, up till now, we have only had at our disposal approximations made through comments from authors like Lluís Permanyer (1991) or Maurici Serrahima (2003).
