Abstract

This paper is a study of the vocabulary of suffering used by the Occitan troubadours and its relationships with the eschatological concepts of Christianity in the twelfth century. The aim is to highlight the structural similarity between the patterns of thought of the time and the poetic code that serves as the basis for the doctrine of finamors. For this purpose, through relevant lexical analyses, I draw particular attention to the penitential aspect of suffering and waiting for the loved one, as well as the analogy between the Provençal iter amoris and purgatory, that third place in the Christian next world, which was declared an article of faith in the same period.
