Abstract

This article is a revision of the theories on the origin of the macrodivision of Catalan into eastern and western (Reconquest, substratum, Romanization, levelling). Twelve phonetic, morphological and lexical features are analysed and illustrated with maps and, from the chronology, it can be deduced that we need to abandon the substratum and Romanization theories in favour of the idea of Reconquest, while taking the levelling hypothesis into account as a precursor of the recent studies on the presence of Aragonese in Valencian.
