«Langue» et «nation» - une relation périlleuse

Abstract

This article seeks to show the interest of historical and comparative studies of the terms language and nation. It highlights some new meanings acquired by these terms, above all in the French and German domains, while suggesting that further complementary studies on the Ibero-Romance languages would also yield very interesting results. It also alerts readers with respect to excessively finalistic interpretations of history, even in the field of semantics.
