Abstract

«Enquesta sobrel teatre en vers» («A Survey on Attitudes to Drama in Verse»), which was published in Teatralia (1908-1909), and was closely associated with «Nova Empresa de Teatre Català» («New Enterprise of Catalan Drama») (1908-1910), expresses the concerns of a group of intellectuals to raise the standard of Catalan drama with a view to stabilization and normalization. The convergence of interests that took place among a group of Modernist and early nineteenthcentury writers as a result of the inquiry, with respect to the demand for a purified model of poetic drama, revealed the difficulty that professional Catalan drama was experiencing at this time. This situation was remedied in the period from 1917 to 1918, when the Fàbregas-Canals company took over the management of Teatre Romea. It was a time when the early nineteenth-century ideology was beginning to decline, the Paral.lel was set for its golden age, and nobody knew in what way the outcome of the Great War would affect the development of the theatre everywhere.
