Abstract

Manuscript 375/2 of the “Biblioteca de Catalunya” (Library of Catalonia) has a prominent place in the genesis of Canigó. It is the first collection in one single volume of all the cantos in the work, including the epilogue, which were formerly lying scattered around in unbound folds and loose sheets. As the first complete fair copy, this manuscript provided Verdaguer with the opportunity of attemping a first critical reading of the poem as a whole, during which he discovered passages that could be improved or removed. He left his thoughts on the pages of the manuscript either as notes in the margin or in the form of numerous changes and alternatives. On some occasions, he even composed new passages: the «Cant de Gentil», the 10th canto, perhaps the verses devoted to Ripoll in the 11th canto. These inclusions in turn led to other changes in the poem
