Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyse the properties of the verb suïcidar-se ‘to commit suicide’ through a grammatical and historical description of its origin and evolution in four Romance languages that have adopted this neologism: Catalan, Spanish, French and Italian. This historical analysis will allow us to propose a hypothesis that explains its unique formation process and help us understand why this verb can only be described grammatically as a verb that is both pronominal and reflexive because it is modelled semantically on the synonymous verb matar-se ‘to kill oneself’.
