Abstract

This study analyses the geolinguistic data on the Vía láctea (Milky Way) and the Remolino (Whirlwind) or Viento en espiral (Spiral Wind) in the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) and in the regional atlases of European Spanish. These cases verify the extent to which small-domain and large-domain linguistic atlases are complementary in dialect research. Moreover, the chronological differences between the surveys of these atlases enable to observe the development of dialectal speech varieties and to address geolinguistic research from a diachronic viewpoint. In short, both the ALPI and the regional atlases reveal previously unrecorded dialectal forms that contribute to tracing the history and evolution of the lexicon.
