Abstract

In this article, the study of the reception of Baudelaire in Catalonia before 1892 is supplemented with further references. In addition to being appreciated for his translation of and preface to Edgar Allan Poe, his vindication of Wagner, his recreation of the myth of Don Juan and the presence of cats in his work, he was variably considered a Classicist, a Parnassian, a Romantic, fanciful, mad, a realist, malignant, a moralist, a pessimist, decadent, a precursor of symbolism, an aestheticist, and modern, etc. The reception of Baudelaire contributes to a revaluation of the complexity of this period in Catalan culture.
