Abstract

The concept of canon applied to troubadour lyric poetry can be verified in the first place through inspection of the manuscripts and the study of the internal structure of the anthologies. This is the only way to understand the criteria adopted by the compilers in the selection of the authors who appear in the major medieval anthologies of troubadour poetry. This article focuses on the realist poetry canon, that is to say, the texts in which the main subject is not love. They form a heterogeneous group, and their dissemination in anthologies has still received little attention from scholars. Hypotheses on the strategies used for compiling the anthologies will therefore be proposed, focussing especially on the Venetian tradition.
