Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of the most common errors in Catalan as a Foreign Language (CLE in Catalan) based on the spoken interlanguage of a group of Czech university students. To conduct this analysis, we review the main research trends in Applied Linguistics within the field of error analysis (Lado, 1957; Corder, 1967; Selinker, 1972), specifically in second language acquisition, and attempt to establish the most suitable criteria to classify these errors. After observing the students' speaking performance in our lessons, we find that the majority of errors in Catalan affect morphosyntax, but also vocabulary, phonetics and phonology. The conclusions of this paper give us some insight into the difficulties encountered by Czech learners of Catalan and the challenges that teachers of Catalan as a Foreign Language have to face.
