Abstract

The thesis of the uniqueness of Tirant lo Blanch versus the overall narrative output of the 15th Century, which the best critics have often highlighted, may stem from the fact that the work has not been successfully placed within the framework of the European novel of the epoch. In the France of end of the 14th Century, there was a type of novel, which reaped great success, and which, albeit shorter than Tirant, shared the latters traits of geographical and historic similarity, the relative realism of events and characters, the bond between chivalresque undertakings and romantic plots, etc. In this light, Tirant comes as the point of arrival of a process of development of narrative style.
