Resum

Anyone who has studied Romance Philology through the major standard languages of the group spoken in Western Europe, including Italian, will feel that, at first glance, Rumanian is relatively undescipherable. From a typological point of view, it is doubtless a Romance language. Its vocabulary, whether inherited directly or indirectly through borrowing (especially from French) is basically Latin. Its grammatical structures are not fundamentally different from those of other Romance languages: simplification of declensions, creation of articles and clitics, development of complex verbal morphology, and a sentential syntax based on the patterns and . Rumanian develops along the lines of the other Romance languages but, while the western ones reduce some features or put a brake on them, Rumanian extends them. My hypothesis is that the individuality and excentricity of Rumanian is the result of a linguistic evolution less restrained by the presence of the Latin model and a long history of grammatical prescription ? in a word, a more natural kind of growth.
