Resum

This paper proposes the existence of a relationship between the locative adverbial pronoun hi/ý and copular verbs in the Romance languages, so that, if the pronoun disappears in a particular Romance language, then this will facilitate the spread of estar to all kinds of locative expressions, while the survival of the pronoun will prevent this. Therefore, it is because the locative pronoun hi is found in Catalan that estar has not spread to locative expressions as exhaustively as in Castilian. The loss of the locative pronoun (y/ý) in Castilian in the 15th century has encouraged an exceptionless use of estar, so that now nearly all locative contexts contain this verb, while Catalan still employs ésser for more permanent location.
