Abstract

When we question what constitutes a philosophical movement or tradition, we usually use criteria such as the existence of a group, a method, or a shared research project. Sometimes we use the term genealogy to design the internal dynamism and variations of such philosophical traditions. The paper addresses the problems that arise from a linear understanding of philosophical genealogies that often coincide with the patriarchal transmission of the common philosophical heritage excluding women and other minorities. To oppose the patriarchal model, a critical approach to genealogy is presented in order to correct bias related to gender, race, and class. A critical genealogy of the history of ideas will investigate not only the modes of transmission but also the omissions and other possible interpretative ways to enrich our experiences of what it means to have an examined life.
