Abstract

This article assesses the results and potential of Barcelona Metropolitan Areas strategy to tackle the impact of globalisation. The strategy is compared to those unfolded in thirty other important metropolitan regions present in the EU prior to its enlargement in 2004. The analysis is based on lessons in new economic geography on the impact of globalisation in metropolitan regions. The study divides the strategies or functional specialisations of metropolitan areas into three general categories: leisure-city, headquarters-city and innovation-city. This quantative analysis allows Barcelona Metropolitan Area to be positioned in all three metropolitan areas in terms of the results according to the functional specialisations as well as in terms of potential.
