Abstract

The Spanish model of economic growth during the last few years has focused basically on household consumption. Spending above the GDP rate in general as a consequence of increased incomes has led to serious problems for many families in the form of over-borrowing. This paper shows how an economic model focussed on a high level of growth in the building sector will not be sustainable in the long term. Hence, according to the text, the private sector and construction-based growth model is not a good approach for economic equilibrium. A model based on collective investment is suggested. We will see how structural problems have appeared again. The European Union will be able to account for the satisfactory industrial recovery by using methods such as specialisation and access to new technologies, facilitating trade with other countries.
