Abstract

This paper analyses the tax deficit of Catalonia in comparison with other regions of Spain. From the European standpoint, Spain may be viewed as a highly centralised State with federal features. Public expenditure is approached differently according to regions and there are large differences in its distribution. Monetary flows are used for this study instead of the beneficiary method as an explanatory measure. In short, the State shows an asymmetric behaviour.
