Abstract

In the wake of the markets liberalisation, Spains electricity industry has undergone important changes in recent years. In this paper, Ignasi Nieto takes a look at the situation in which liberalisation was lacking and which finally came to be resolved. The extensive regulation of the industry caused its efficiency to be questioned and the liberalising movement led to the privatisation of public companies in the rest of Europe in the early 1980s. Ten years later, institutions like theWorld Bank and the InternationalMonetary Fund followed suit in the policy applied to their operations. In Spain, for its part, the electricity industry was liberalised after Endesas privatisation. Today, problems are focused on management costs, communication networks, distribution and commercialisation.
