Abstract

Catalan culture has contributed to the ordering of commerce and manufarture. The Llibre del Consolat del Mar is the basis of the international maritime code. The first bill of exchange was written in Catalan in 1376, and insurance was also first developed in Catalan . However the banning of Catalan with the establishment of the Spanish centralised state in the 18 C. resulted in the introduction of Spanish in business during the Industrial Revolution after mid 19 C. Business was conducted in Catalan but written in Spanish, a curious Catalan phenomenon that has continued to the present day. This business tradition affects the current normalisation of Catalan with the establishment of democracy in Spain.
