Abstract

Joan Sardà was the author of the Spanish liberalisation of 1959 which set the basis for rapid economic growth and today's democracy. His experience in the Central Bank of Venezuela dealing constantly with IMF officials served him well to obtain an agreement once back in Spain to devalue the peseta and stabilise the economy, which even dictator Franco had to accept. Joan Sardà was a giant intellectual figure and as professor Estapé says in his homage: "Our debt to him we can never repay".
