Twitter’s low impact on interaction with the media audience. A comparative study between Catalan and Belgian online newspapers Authors Susana Pérez-Soler Universitat Ramon Llull Josep Lluís Micó Universitat Ramon Llull Keywords: digital communication, journalism, social networks, journalistic routines, participation, professional roles. Abstract Despite its designation, participation in the communication media still flows in a single direction: it is at the service of media companies rather than audiences (Lewis, Holton and Coddington, 2014). This study analyses the use of Twitter by Catalan and Belgian journalists. A traditional newspaper and a pure player of each country are studied: Ara and VilaWeb in Catalonia and Le Soir and Apache in Belgium. To this purpose, non-participant observation has been carried out in each of the newsrooms for two weeks and different profiles have been interviewed, from editors to news writers and social media managers. DIP, an original model for studying the Twitter accounts of these media, has been used. It quantifies dissemination of own contents, interaction with the audience, promotion of the company and calls for participation. Keywords: digital communication, journalism, social networks, journalistic routines, participation, professional roles.
