Abstract The Catalan Informatics Olympiad (OIcat) is an annual competition aimed at lower and upper secondary school students interested in computer science and computational thinking in Catalonia. OIcat promotes interest in computer science and stimulates creativity while testing participants’ skills in a rewarding competitive context. In addition to the competition itself, OIcat also offers parallel activities to train students and to promote ethical and sustainable professional practice in technology. This article highlights the importance of computational thinking as a fundamental skill and presents the key stakeholders, resources and activities connected with this competition.
