Abstract

A knowledge of the Catalan ways of making music necessarily calls for a knowledge of the historiographically consolidated composers. However, the small details and nuances of Catalan music are also defined by minor figures and by the direct transmission of knowledge between masters and disciples. This study inventories the work of Pau Llinàs known to date, based on an exhaustive search through known sources and currently available catalogues. This necessary task is aimed to lend a certain prominence to a modest composer who formed part of a professional network of national scope. We seek to define this figure, compiling the data published up to now, and above all to increase our biographical knowledge of this figure. Accordingly, this paper begins with a sketch of the religious music panorama in Barcelona, subsequently going into greater detail on the composers ecclesiastical life. This overview is mainly based on a study of the documentation to be found at the parish archive of the church of Santa Maria del Pi in Barcelona, where Llinàs was the chapel master for 37 years.
