Abstract

The taste for lyric drama among audiences at the Casa de Comèdies (Comedy Play House) in Barcelona gradually became established during the 18th century. While much is known about opera, very few studies have been conducted on other genres. In this respect, the tonadilla is especially significant. This genre is a kind of satirical musical comedy, for which the Madrid-born composer Jacinto Valledor was particularly renowned. He was the first musician of the Teatre de Barcelonas company of Spanish actors at an irregular time between 1773 or 1774 and 1785. Valledor was the star of an odd period when the genre peaked in Barcelona (1773-1775), though subsequent evidence shows that the genre continued to remain current and strong. The aim of this article is, therefore, to try and establish what the tonadilla culture at Barcelonas Casa de Comèdies was like in that period based on the data we have available, whether directly or indirectly related to Jacinto Valledor.
