Els Sons ocults del paper perforat Authors Jordi Roquer González Abstract The player piano represented a true mass phenomenon during the first three decades of the last century. Its story gives us some interesting information about the birth of the great music industries, the beginnings of the massive distribution of music and the paradigm shift related to the capacity of choosing the desired music in the desired moment. This article starts with a brief historical and technological contextualization to address immediately the study of the player piano phenomenon in Catalonia from some documentary sources that, despite their high interest, have not been widely exploited. Far from presenting a systematic and quantitative analysis of these materials, the aim of this article is to show the potential of the player piano roll as a witness of our past, both from the musical and social perspective.
