Abstract

On the occasion of the International Conference Musical Iconography in the Mediterranean and Its Impact on European Culture through History, a visit was made to the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) in December 2010. Using explanatory tables, this paper presents all the musical instruments or musical groups that are found in the paintings of this museums permanent exhibition, and in those of the two other collections housed in the National Palace building: the Cambó Legacy and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. All told, a study is made of fifty-three paintings, two posters and one sculpture, which contain a total of two hundred instruments, twelve vocal groups singing with a score, one band and two orchestras, in addition to one real instrument.
