Abstract

Theatrical elements in the Catalan oratorio of the second half of the 18th century. This article, centered around the oratorio in Catalonia, analyzes the connections between this religious genre and other related dramatic genres. In the first part of the article, the author reviews the precedents of the oratorio, having all in common a dramatic text with a developing action and characters who interact among themselves; one of the precedents, the Sacra rappresentazione di Anima et di Corpo, stands as a common origin for both opera and oratorio. Although these two genres have developed in different directions with their own traits, both maintain dramatic and theatrical characteristics. In the second part, the author, taking as examples several Catalan oratorios from the second half of the 18th century, directs his attention to some aspects of these compositions which characterize them as belonging to a dramatic genre.
