Abstract

A Medieval organ carved in a column at the village of Calaceit. Description of the village of Calaceite (province of Teruel) and its history in which a house known as del Justícia has a stone column containing the carved representation of what seems to be an organ. After a discussion of different interpretations regarding this depiction, there is a description of several medieval manuscripts with drawings of a similar organ, which helps to learn about the characteristics of this organ and its possible date. According to these sources, this instrument would date from late-13th to early-14th century, which corresponds to the date of the gothic columns in this house. In 1999 a Dutch organ builder made an organ following the instructions of these manuscripts and other texts; one can see and listen to this organ at a church in Groningen, Holland. Finally, the article puts forward a series of additional questions that could encourage other scholars to continue this research: was this house (facing the village?s church) that of the organist? How come such an organ, or its image, reached Calaceite? The mystery rests open.
