Abstract

This article presents two little-known facts about the poem “Dels quatre vents” (‘From the four winds’), one of the sonnets that inspired Eduard Toldrà’s Sis sonets per a violí i piano (‘Six sonnets for violin and piano’): (a) the title of the original poem, by Reverend Anton Navarro, is “Rapsòdia clàssica” (‘Classical rhapsody’), and not “Dels quatre vents” (‘From the four winds’), which is actually the title of a series of five poems including this one; (b) the landscape evoked by the poem is not, as previously believed, the Occitan valley of Lis. These facts, together with the musical analysis of the work, help us to understand the decisions made by Toldrà regarding the structure and compositional resources of this piece.
