Abstract

Catalan musical heritage, particularly from the period immediately prior to the Civil War, features many composers of notable potential whose contributions were obscured by historical circumstances. Joan Pujol i Mateu (1862-1938), a violinist, composer and educator, is one of them. He was a respected individual who worked with eminent figures such as Pau Casals or Joan Lamote de Grignon. However, due to the war and the dark post-war years of the Franco dictatorship, his compositions were relegated to the archives and his biography nearly forgotten. This article serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it seeks to demonstrate how the digitization of archives and, above all, the enthusiasm of musicians to perform new repertories can enable us to rediscover and disseminate the works of these forgotten composers, thereby enriching the current musical landscape. Secondly, once this preliminary research has been conducted, it also seeks to pave the way for more in-depth, exhaustive research into the composer. This would provide a more accurate explanation of the cultural and musical shift that took place in Spain during this period. This article offers an initial biography followed by a broad, albeit not comprehensive, overview of his works to allow readers to become acquainted with Joan Pujol.
