Study of the Daily Office of the Virgin Mary in manuscript 72 from the Library of the Abbey of Montserrat

Abstract

This paper presents a musicological study of Manuscript 72 from the Library of the Abbey of Montserrat, also known as the Mystic Book of Sant Romà de les Bons. This 12th-century manuscript is highly significant for the study of Catalan musical notation due to its comprehensive nature with very few gaps. It focuses on the Daily Office of the Virgin Mary. Firstly, it is compared with the ancient Urgell consuetudinary to confirm its alignment with the liturgical rites of La Seu d’Urgell region. Moreover, four significant chants from the same office are transcribed. This transcription is then validated thanks to a thorough comparative study with other manuscripts.
