Abstract

Today, traditional oral music (understood as music passed down from generation to generation) appears to have lost its prominence within the annual festivities calendar. Demographic shifts, factors such as immigration, and the new social and economic structures derived from globalisation may contribute to the decline in the presence of local music. This paper seeks to analyse whether academic studies in ethnomusicology and musicology have a real impact on the contemporary performance of the phenomena they examine. On the other hand, recordings of traditional oral music posted online provide an opportunity to preserve materials that concurrently interact with current and future academic research. Studies on the Mallorca Sibil·la have led to its declaration as intangible cultural heritage; research from a variety of perspectives into the Festival of Sant Antoni has rendered it a popular event among young people; and the Goigs de Pasqua have seen major revival efforts in the wake of the research carried out on this repertoire. These outcomes shed light on the dynamics of reciprocal engagement between the academic and performative worlds.
