Abstract

Francesc Pujol i Pons was not the director of the Orfeó Català during the Spanish Civil War but rather its assistant director. Nevertheless, a structural change came about in the organisation of the choir as a result of the outbreak of the conflict. At that time, Maestro Lluís Millet i Pagès decided to retire to his hometown, El Masnou, making only brief stays in the city of Barcelona. The responsibilities of Pujol i Pons were affected by this circumstance. This article looks into the difficulties, twists of fate and events which had to be dealt with by both the Orfeó Català as a whole and Maestro Pujol, who stood at the head of this important Catalan choir during the war years, in particular.

This research study was conducted for the most part at CEDOC (Orfeó Català Documentation Centre) with the invaluable aid of Professor Francesc Cortès, consulting the various personal holdings which still remain in the Orfeó’s archives.
